Foundation grants play a secondary role in the financing of all but a handful of
public radio stations. In the aggregate, however, the amounts are substantial.
SRG members now generate some $3.5 million in foundation grants, about four percent
of their nongovernment support.
Foundation support will continue to provide only a modest percentage of public
radio's overall cash flow. But there is opportunity for significant growth. Over
the next three years, a sustained effort could generate as much as $1.5 million in
new philanthropic support for SRG members.
The Foundation Project is an effort to understand more clearly station experiences
with foundation grants and to create and implement strategies that will bring more
foundation funding to SRG members’ public service programming and other activities.
